Preliminary Seismic Hazard Assessment in West Africa Based on Incomplete Seismic Catalogs

West Africa is considered a region of low seismicity. However, the monitoring earthquake activity by local seismic arrays began very early (as as 1914) in but catalogs are incomplete. In 1991, Bertil studied seismicity based on networks stations Ivory Coast and neighboring countries. The reference work Ambraseys Adams well recent earthquakes given international data centres were also used for computations hazard parameters. Different event have been compiled homogenised to moment magnitude (Mw). obtained catalog covers period over four centuries (1615-2021) contains large historical events complete observations. part has subdivided into subcatalogs with each level completeness. minimum maximum observed equal 2.89 6.8 respectively whole catalog. code software developed Kijko was calculate results give b value 0.83 ± 0.08 preliminary hazards curves plotted return periods 25, 50 100 years. This good practical example showing that this procedure can be assessment Africa.
